In The Fences We Make, Lioda Conrad explores the visible and invisible boundaries that shape human experience. A vivid band of crimson stretches across the composition like an emotional horizon, layered with atmospheric washes of charcoal, slate, and soft earth tones. Vertical strokes of cool blue punctuate the surface—suggestive of barriers, markers, or divisions—standing in quiet contrast to the fluid movement surrounding them.

The tension between structure and spontaneity is central to this work. Conrad’s intuitive watercolor technique allows pigment to bleed and merge organically, while the deliberate linear elements introduce rhythm and restraint. The result is a compelling abstract narrative about protection, separation, and the spaces we create—both to guard and to contain ourselves.

Executed on archival Hahnemühle paper, sealed for longevity, and offered signed, framed, and shipped, this piece presents collectors with a refined, emotionally resonant work that balances contemporary abstraction with deeply human themes.
