Artist painting vibrant abstract portrait on canvas.

A Surreal Visionary in Contemporary African Art

Born in 1970 in Delta State, Nigeria, Norbert Okpu is a distinguished contemporary artist recognized for his psychologically layered surrealism and sophisticated visual language. A graduate of Yaba College of Technology—where he earned the distinction of Best Student in the School of Art, Design, and Printing—Okpu quickly established himself as a formidable presence within Nigeria’s art landscape.

His work is defined by fragmented planes, symbolic abstraction, and richly textured surfaces. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, and often incorporating unconventional materials, Okpu creates compositions that explore identity, memory, resilience, and the evolving realities of modern African society. Each piece invites sustained engagement, revealing deeper narrative complexity over time.

Okpu has held multiple solo exhibitions and participated in over thirty group exhibitions across Nigeria, Ghana, and the United States. His international profile includes representation by Amsterdam Whitney Gallery (USA), participation in a world-touring national collection, prestigious residencies, and consistent auction placements in both Nigeria and abroad.

A respected member of the Society of Nigerian Artists and current General Secretary of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria, Okpu combines artistic mastery with institutional leadership.

For discerning collectors, Norbert Okpu represents a mature, internationally exhibited African artist whose work offers both cultural gravitas and long-term acquisition value within the expanding global contemporary art market.
