In The Separation of Blue, Lioda Conrad explores the emotional architecture of distance—between land and sky, memory and present, stillness and rupture. A luminous expanse of warm ochre and burnt sienna rises across the upper register, textured and weathered, while a band of softened white mediates the descent into layered blues below. The transition feels both geological and psychological—like a horizon shifting under pressure.
The lower field of blue carries weight and movement, rendered in sweeping gestures and tonal variations that suggest depth and introspection. Conrad’s use of oil and acrylic on paper allows for a delicate interplay between opacity and transparency, where edges dissolve and re-form, reinforcing the theme of separation without finality.
At 47 inches square, this work holds balanced, contemplative presence. It invites sustained viewing—revealing subtleties in texture, atmosphere, and color that unfold gradually. For collectors, The Separation of Blue represents a sophisticated and emotionally resonant addition to a contemporary collection, embodying Conrad’s mature exploration of abstraction, land, and inner landscape.
