In The Interpretation of Line no. 13, Lioda Conrad elevates the simplest visual element—the line—into a powerful, meditative statement. Sweeping bands of ochre and muted gold move across a deep, atmospheric ground, their surfaces interrupted by raw textures and subtle abrasions created through the use of oil and tar. The materiality is unapologetic, tactile, and commanding.
The repetition of curved linear forms suggests rhythm, continuity, and coded language—marks that feel both ancient and contemporary. Conrad’s restrained palette heightens the emotional weight of the composition, allowing texture, contrast, and movement to take precedence. The interplay between darkness and illumination creates a quiet tension, inviting contemplation rather than immediate resolution.
At an impressive 47 x 47 inches, this large-scale work holds architectural presence, making it a statement piece within a serious contemporary collection. The Interpretation of Line no. 13 speaks to collectors drawn to bold abstraction, material experimentation, and works that explore the foundational language of mark-making with depth and sophistication.
